Breaking My Bones
Talking While FCKD S5, Ep. 2 Trailer
May 10th, 2023 | By Alexandra Meda
Ever been so desperate for change and growth that you consider breaking yourself apart for it? Have you ever looked up to the sky and felt limited by it rather than expanded? These are some of the questions we are interrogating with the theme for our second Talking While FCKD Live: Storytelling Sessions Thursday, May 25th at 7pm at THE STUDIO in Boyle.
Let’s go back to April for a second when this trailer was created. One of our storytellers found herself staying in the Bay Area in a small house with a beautiful garden of eden type backyard which sounds magical…. but the current events of her life were demanding a shedding process that simultaneously felt like the world had to cave in so she could emerge anew. That person was me. Hi. Alex Meda here, and Maya is encouraging me to be transparent, so I am trying. Which is hard, because I hate sharing anything on the internet. And yet, I want to share everything. So. This is my trying.
Change can be one of the hardest things humans engage with and yet it is as inevitable as death and taxes and so WHY DON’T WE LEARN HOW TO HANDLE CHANGE IN SCHOOL? OR AT HOME? That’s another blog though. Intense change is almost always good, but it is ABSOLUTELY always painful. So there I was metaphorically breaking my bones in the outlandishly chilly April that California experienced, and I was like, f-it. You are going to make a trailer that unpacks the themes of this event that happen to be the themes of your life right now, and you are going to do it in three hours, and it is going to make you feel better because DAMN YOU BE CRYING A LOT RIGHT NOW. I needed this artistic catharsis. And I needed to explore what it is to trust that there is something beyond what you can see. There is more behind what is in front of you. There is more.
The theme Skies Beyond Skies was inspired by a few different lyrics by Residente and Calle 13 and those lyrics have filled our heads and hearts with lots of inspiration over the years— but, the one that sticks out the most for me-- and it might be familiar to some of you because it was one of our Write With Us Prompts in April that almost exclusively dealt with the skies and sky beings-- “Somos diferentes cielos en un mismo mapa” or “ We are different skies on the same map” from the song Desencuentro. This lyric makes me think about the different planes we all exist in simultaneously — obvi there is the right here and now-- but in reality -- the right here and now can feel completely other-dimensional because of our differences. Which gets us back to imagination. Our imagination has been taught to build new worlds. But as Adrienne Maree Brown tells us we can get trapped in others imaginations that are much more limited. The sky above is one of those things that can be either a boundary that is not to be crossed, and for others, it is the beginning of a frontier to a much greater beyond.
We must understand that our imaginations have all been socialized and wired to impact what we see as possible— even if we understand imagination to be something infinite. But they can be designed as closed spaces too. Experiment and tell me what you interpret from what is visible when you look up.
So this is our invitation to explore some of those shadow worlds. To excavate, break apart, cover in love, and then RELEASE. Dismantle those compacted, compartmentalized bits of yourself and push your “sky is the limit” way out beyond. Let’s shed what isn’t serving us any longer together at this event. Let’s burst onto new horizons. On March 25th, share a story -- or listen-- to those offered by Kelley Williams, Geneva Faye, and Alexandra Meda. Get a ticket at bit.ly/twfskiesstorytellers
