Curtain Call: Until Next Time

May 30, 2024 | By Sofia Lugo

GREETINGS FRIENDS!!!

As my time as a Producer in Residence at Studio Luna through the NNPN program comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on this journey. It’s been a period of growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences.

During my time at Luna, I’ve had the privilege of curating three exciting TWF events: Root, Legend, and Dawn. These storytelling events were not only a testament to our collective creativity but also an opportunity for me to refine my skills and make meaningful contributions to our community. The experience of planning these events has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to see the tangible impact of our work at Luna.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been immersing myself in the operational side of Studio Luna. From creating events and sending emails to organizing and managing various systems, I’ve learned so much! Under the guidance of Alex and Maya , I gained invaluable insights into event planning and organizational skills. These hands-on experiences have significantly shaped my understanding of theatre operations and highlighted the importance of meticulous planning and collaboration. These skills are ones I will cherish and carry forward with me for a long time.

Additionally, I’ve had the opportunity to attend various community events and workshops, which has expanded my understanding and appreciation of the diverse voices in the Los Angeles area. Connecting with other people in the community, learning from their experiences, and sharing our common passion for the arts has been incredibly enriching.

A highlight of the program was my trip to New York, where I met my cohort and other NNPN members. These interactions were inspiring and offered a wealth of knowledge. The support within the network have been truly uplifting.

Alex Meda & Maya Malan-Gonzalez!!

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my mentor and Artistic Director of Studio Luna, Alex Meda, for her guidance and for sharing the real life insights that have been crucial in my growth. Her dedication to teach and her support has been a cornerstone of my experience. I am also grateful to have worked closely with Maya, whose assistance and shared moments in maintaining the space and navigating rentals have been invaluable.

Reflecting on my journey, I realized how quickly time has flown. Despite personal challenges and an ever changing life, I persevered and continued to put in the effort because I genuinely care about Luna. It hasn’t always been easy, but the support and encouragement I’ve received have made significant difference. I’ve learned that it’s okay not to be perfect. Embracing and celebrating the small wins have made the journey rewarding. Every step, no matter how small, has contributed to my growth and understanding.

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is that producing is a broad field, and each producer defines their role in unique ways. For me, it’s more than organizing and managing events; it’s about fostering creativity, building connections, and creating inclusive spaces where diverse voices can be heard. Being a creative producer means navigating challenges, embracing flexibility, and always striving to bring the best out of every situation. It’s about making sure every detail, no matter how small, contributes to the larger vision and ensuring that everyone involved feels valued and included.

Looking forward, I am filled with excitement for the future and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. My time at Studio Luna and with NNPN has been a real eye-opener. It’s helped me understand how complex producing can be and why inclusivity matters so much. The insights I gained and the connections I’ve made will continue to influence my path as I move forward.

Thank you for this opportunity and for opening your doors and giving me a chance! This has been a major period of character growth for me. I certainly leveled up!

This isn’t a goodbye but a heartfelt thank you and an eager anticipation for what the future holds. I am honored to have been a part of this program and to have contributed to the vibrant community at Studio Luna. I look forward to continuing my journey of self-discovery, empowerment, embracing creativity, and striving to make a positive impact in meaningful ways.

Thank you all for being a part of this journey. Until next time!

Sofia out!
